The New York Interviews
In the summer of 2024, Kevin Kirkwood traveled to New York to meet artists in their studios and creative spaces, capturing on-location conversations across the city’s diverse neighborhoods. Recordings took place in the Lower East Side, Upper East Side, Sunset Park, Dumbo, Williamsburg, and Queens. Over the course of one week, sessions were held in studios, storage units, dining rooms, basements, detached garages, and even outdoors at Prospect Park on Juneteenth. These episodes highlight the everyday conditions of making while reflecting the city’s energy, culture, and artistic networks.

Most episodes seek to understand when and why people make what they make. Conversations focus on process, material, and sustained creative labor, tracing how ideas begin, shift, and persist over time, and how local context informs artistic practice. The Strand exists in the space between studio practice and lived experience, allowing meaning to emerge through place, movement, and dialogue.

With each episode, The Strand becomes a living archive of contemporary creative practice; how ideas evolve, how artists push forward, and how art continues to shape our cultural landscape.
