ABSTRACT:

Subdivisions is an installation placed into a 12’x14’ space. To maximize the intensity of the video light, all of the interior fluorescent light tubes are extinguished. The entire space, including the floor and all of the walls are painted with Behr’s darkest, flattest black; “Limousine Leather”. The video is projected from (4) four Kodak Luma 350 projectors and (1) one Asus laptop. The video is received by over 200 square feet of ¼” foam core that was cut in place and adhered to the walls and ceiling with metal drywall screws and black twine.

The site of the installation, Studio C9 is relatively small in scale and the projected videos are larger than life. The room is pitch dark. Both attributes, scale and darkness, commingled with multiple viewers in the space at one time creates a sense of uncomfortability.

Each of the foam core panels are scored and then folded into acute angles. These angles allow the projected light to travel from one side of a panel, over its seam, and over to another panel. The angels force the light to not travel in a linear path. Rather, the light makes radical gestures as it passes across each panel.

Medium: 213 Square Feet Foam Core. 1’/4”. White, Black Twine, Black Paint, Black Drywall Screws, Wood Shelf, (4) Kodak Luma 350 DLP Projectors, (1) Microsoft Surface 6 , (1) Asus
