ABSTRACT:

This installation consists of thirty-three white cardboard shipping boxes that are placed in the center of the gallery. Two black boxes, made from cedar planks, are placed at either end of the room: one at the north and the other at the south. Each wooden box contains one laptop computer and one LED projector.

Viewers are invited to interact and engage with the work. The configuration of the cardboard boxes have the potential to be ever changing, and so will the user’s experience. Each participant is encouraged to control how the work is perceived by choosing (or not) to stack the boxes on top of each other, with the hope of revealing the projected video.

When this exhibit is installed (Stage One), each of the cardboard boxes will be placed on the floor, grouped together at the center of the room. Video will be projected from each of the wooden boxes and aimed towards and just above the cardboard boxes. So, the video vanishes. It dissipates as it drifts across the room because it has nothing to land on. Most of the video images will not be seen until the audience stacks the boxes one on top of each other, (Stage Two). “Stage Two” reflects how I envision the best configuration of the installation.

For optimum viewing of “Block Party”, stack the cardboard boxes in a 8’x12’x4’ (HxLxW)configuration. The larger dimension should be perpendicular to each of the projectors, east to west in this current installment. Another recommendation to optimize the visual experience is that many, if not all of the boxes should be placed on a diagonal that runs northeast to southwest. This will allow the images to wrap from one side of the box to another.
